They are considered a schooling fish but once they are comfortable with the tank they will branch off and may swim alone freely. Minimum 6+ for a school.

I love zebra danios! (I'm very biased toward them.) I think they are a great, hardy, energetic but not crazy schooling fish.
 
I've got seven and love them! They're very high energy. What I've found is they branch off during the day and the males establish their "territories" and then at night they stay more close together and school more.


•22 gal zebra danio, 75 gal red ear slider•
 
Celestial pearl danios school amazingly together. They stick together like glue. Just be careful though, they're really tiny.
