That sounds like the safe route. My lfs has the black sand at 16.99 a 20lb bag.
Im not saying not to use the blasting sand because i know people do but it just scares me.

Set it to your temp then it stays in there all the time only turning on when tank temp drops below set temp on the heater

Here it is up. No water until I get sand. Sorry about the mess. I cut some carpet up so it would sit even ( the wife didnt care?!?!) And now its perfect.
