40g breeder in the future.

1-2 months from now I will be getting a 40g Breeder tank. I will use my Topfin60 filter on it, which is already an established filter in my 10g (it's only running at about 1/4 water flow because it's in the 10g). Right now I have my 10g that I put two Cichlids in today, a Lemon Drop(or electric yellow?) and Red Fin Cichlid. They are just little guys right now, so I'm not worried about them being in the 10g.

Are 4 Pygmy Cories going to be ok in the tank with these two? If needed, I can re-home them tomorrow. Also... how many more small cichlids can I add to the 10g if I re-home everything else, and just have cichlids in the tank? Remember.. I am getting a 40g breeder in no more than two months.

I've been reading about the cichlid's that I got all night, and compatibility with the 40g Breeder.

The majority is telling me that I can hold 1-3 males. That means if I get two males, I'll have to get 6 females. Correct?

Can I fit 3 males + 9 females in a 40g Breed? <5" cichlids such as the Labidochromis caeruleus(electric yellow) and others.

as long as you do plenty of water changes, should be alright!
what do u want on ur stocklist? if u want to breed and sell to a lfs, they will have to be purebreeds, so maybe be a little careful on how many diff species u put in there.
is the red-fin a powder blue body with orangey-red fins? are you sure of their genders? and i think the cories would be fine, but im not sure. i hope someone more experienced can help you out with that one x

Mbuna will kill Cory cats sooner or later, and a 40 breeder is simply too small for just about any of them. Forget the 40 and figure on a 75 with proper filtration for a very heavily stocked tank.

a 40 is small but provided the fish are small enough to not outgrow it, he should be ok, but the bioload will need addressing, water changes will have to be bigger than usual. i dont think theres that much of an issue, but keep up the cleanliness and dont get big stocking.

I'm only keeping the pygmy cories until I move the cichlids into a bigger tank. I'm getting a lot of mixed information about 40g and these cichlids. Some websites say the fish reach 8", some say 4-5".

A lot of this hobby is living and learning, I may have 9 fish in a 40g that only grow to 5" and live for many years happily. Maybe a couple will outgrow it and I'll rehome them. I'm good about my water condition, I stay on top of testing the water and doing PWC's depending on bio. I'm used to it with a oscar / pleco tank :P

Correct me if I'm wrong but, this plan isn't like saying "I'm putting an oscar in a 40g". As long as I don't overstock, I don't see why 4-8 smaller 4-5" fish can't live in a 40g Breed.\\

The "Forget the 40, get a 75" doesn't really work for me at this state in my life. I think I'm going to continue to get mixed research and information, and I'll try my best.

My plans changed with this tank, I plan on getting a 50g instead and keeping a max of 6 medium dwarf cichlids that will stay <5-6".

Just one. He has a Bichir Eel with him and a Common Pleco (I'll have to rehome the pleco after a few years when he's too big)
