I have african cichlids in a 40 breeder right now and I was wondering how much of a difference a 50 long would really make.

I've never heard of a 50 long, most 50's are 36 7/8 x19 x19 5/8 which is simply taller than a 40 breeder. But the extra water volume is always beneficial.
Are you sure it's not a 40g long which is a 4ft tank?
