My cichlid had babies and did not know until I saw them swimming in and out of the bushes.... What is the best way to clean the bottom without hurting them?

You can get an unused nylon stocking and fit it over the end of your siphon so that if they do get near it, the mesh prevents them from being sucked up.
You can also swish the siphon around gently to encourage them to move out of the way. Honestly if you're careful and wave the siphon to disperse them, you might not even need the stocking.
