Really depends on what type you are keeping. African, SA, CA? Different requirements.
Most Cichlids, "New Worlds & Africans" are farm raised fish and are kept in water where the parameters are not consistent with the water parameters of their ancestors place of origin.
Typically, Africans and Central Americans are kept in hard water with an approx. PH range in the upper 7's to lower 8's. South Americans come from soft, slightly acidic water.
If you are buying cichlids locally, chances are the fish stores water parameters are going to be similar to yours. Most of the time water parameters don't need to be adjusted, just need to be stable. Certain cichlids need specific water conditions to successfully reproduce.
