For every species, there is some basic advice:

1. Keep the water clean. Regular maintenance is particularly important for breeding fish.
2. Research the fish, and try to emulate natural suroundings and diet.
3. Be prepared to take care of the babies yourself. Many species that raise thier own young in the wild will loose interest in the young in the aquarium, and may even eat them. Species that don't raise thier young in the wild are almost guarenteed to eat them if not seperated.
