can anyone point me in the right direction with regards to the smaller cypros? How many are needed to have a happy colony? Who has reasonable stock to purchase from and so forth?

What size tank? They're active fish which need plenty of swimmin' room. You'll want a large group, I'd look at at least 9 but the more the merrier, so if ya have the funds and space to do more I would suggest it.
