At the moment I have a heep of live plants in my 21 gallon tank and it looks ugly. I would like to make it look a bit better an tale them out but I'm not sure if that will affect the water quality and I want to put something in there for them to hide in but Im not sure what can and can't go in a tank, any suggestions?

You don't need live plants. Lots people use driftwood combined with rocks which personally I think looks quite good. Just arrange it to suit your liking. Another option is silk plants which look realistic. I have seen these in supermarkets, believe it or not, and they were good quality. Or you can order them online.

I would say most rock is generally safe to use as long as you don't see lots of tiny air bubbles escaping when submerged. It's been a long time since I needed rocks. I've been using the same ones for about 25 years now....;)
