I currently have one anubius nana in my 55 gal African cichlid tank. I'm planning to add one or two java ferns also. The fish don't seem to bother the anubius (roots are growing and it put out a new leaf). My question is: Would dosing Excel and Flourish be bad for the fish? I don't plan to have many plants, so would the carbon and ferts build up over time?

I would think it would be fine as long as you are doing your regular water changes. Rams are often kept in planted tanks and are way more sensitive than any Africans i know of

I would think you would be fine as well. The carbon breaks down after 24hrs pretty much and I've done much higher doses with no ill effects. Some plants are sensitive. Generally I start at a half or quarter dose and work up the dosing level each week.

Ferts wise that is all pretty low level dosing as far as I know and would also think you should be fine there.

The last night before a water change I will often skip any dosing.
