Ok I have had a twenty gallon tall that was given to me with a aqueon hob filter and ive personally never liked them but it is getting really dirty and need to change the cartridge what can I do/put in the filter to keep it from a mini cycle/complete recycle?

All you need to do is the next time you change your water, put the cartridge in the bucket, rinse anything out and wipe off the muck, and then just put it back in. Simple as that
