So I'm trying to stock my hypothtical new Cichlid tank with the helpful info of the species profiles at Cichlid-Forum.com. I have a question that probably will not matter for stocking, but I would like to know just as well.

Under "Gender Differences" each fish is listed as Monomorphic or Dimorphic. What does this mean?

Simply googling each, I have:

dimorphic - Occurring in or representing two distinct forms.
monomorphic - Having or existing in only one form, in particular.

I'm not sure I can wrap my brain around how this relates to the fish. Does this mean that dimorphic have the ability to transform from male to female or vice versa and dimorphic is more like a human who is born male or female and thats the way it is? If so, is it simply a crapshoot when you get fish whether the ratio you are looking for will work out or not? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I think dimorphic means the m and f look different and mommorphic means they look the same
