So my heater does not work too well and my tank temp goes from about 73-74 to 78-79 every couple days. Is this ok? Or what are the " side effects" from it? Thanks

it could keep rising until your fish can't handle the temperature.

what size tank do you have and what brand of heater?

Well other than that, is there any side effect from it changing from 73-79 on a regular basis?

And it's a 55g, and the heater is an aquaon 250 I think.

The temperature in my smaller tanks fluctuate four degrees per day, on average. When the lights are at "full throttle" the temperature can reach 80 degrees. Yet, in the mornings before the lights come on they're at 76. I do not believe my fish are affected by that swing.

Try splitting the watts between two heaters and place them at opposite ends of the tank. See if that helps.
