Help! White stringy algae or fungus in my filter and water

My water looks very dusty as I looked closer I realized it looks like little white strings I notice my filter was clogged. I checked my sponge it was full of these little white strings and so was the rest of filter I took of as much as I could. Anyone have this problem before. I have 6 cichlids in a 29 gallon.

How old is the tank. Did you cycle it before adding fish? Sometimes you can get really funky blooms of micro organisms in your water after adding your first livestock to a new tank.
