I was wondering if a 36 inch tank like 30 gallons or a 40 gallon breeder is okay for a group of yellow labs or cobalt blue cichlids

What's a group I mean your definition. And I would go with a 40 gallon breeder.

A group I was thinking like 6-8 of one species with some other type of fish to mix with them. Also if I could get a 40 breeder would a 30 gallon work dimensions are 36x12xx16.

A 30 could work for labs but i wouldnt stock any more than 6 for that size tank and you would need superb filtration along with an aggressive pwc schedule.
Cobalt blues are much to aggressive of a cichlid to put in a tight quarters tank like a 30gal. IMO
