spitting food

In the last week, I saw my juvie jewel spit food, but then it ate a couple more. (nls 1mm) In a separate feeding, my female convict also spit one of hers out. I've been giving a bit of cobalt cichlid flakes at some feedings. My yellow lab (in a different tank) and other smaller fish seem to like it better. Sometimes I give them a pinch because the bigger fish eat all the pellets before smaller ones can get to them. My question =) Is spitting always a sign of a problem or could it be because I sometimes switch up foods on them? (i.e. some days pellets at first feeding and a little flake before bed)
