Is 3 JD, 2 convicts, and a red devil too crowded for a 55 gal.???

yes. way to crowded. do you know how big and aggresive they get?

However, another thing to think about is the more fish you add into the tank, the less agressive that they get to a specific one, since the aggretion is spread out. however, keep in mind that this doesn't allways work out.
