My husband and i are currently cycling a 55 gallon that we would like to put some different peacock cichlids in. I was wondering what other cichlids we can get and also about how many would be good in a 55? Also we have a pictus catfish in our 55 gallon community tank but i don't want him to eat my guppies, so would it be ok to put the pictus with cichlids once the tank is cycled?

Pictus really do require a larger tank ( at least 75 gallons, but a 5-6' tank would be best) given how active they are. I'd forego the pictus and pick up some synodontis instead, catfish that are native to the rift lakes where peacocks are from (Malawi).

When I had my peacocks in my 55 I had 15-19 but you need to make sure you have enough of hiding spots..
