Depends on the Dempsey really. It's hit and miss with mine. He's about 7-8" now. I had a nasty Severum one time that he didnt bother at all. He lived with oscars peacefully for quite a while until they got to be the same size as him and then he started nipping fins like crazy. Now he lives with an adult female convict. Sometimes he chases her, sometimes she chases him. They're not often at peace but are very evenly matched and rarely hurt each other.
