Using shrimp sand to lower pH

I was thinking about using shrimp sand for my apistogramma tank so the pH would be 6.5. Would that work?

I've read that article and I don't see how it helps me :/

Alkalinity is above 7. I want my water acidic (under 7....)

Apistogramma/rams/angelfish. I'm just wondering if the shrimp sand that buffers to 6.5 pH is bad for fish...

I have never used it so I am not sure but if you can get a hold of some barley or peat moss and put it in a fabric net or pantyhose then that will naturally and harmlessly lower your pH. Also adding some driftwood will do the trick as well.
