What do you think is important to monitor in a tank?

What do you think is important to monitor in the water condition for African Cichlids, Lake Malawi.

My research suggests the following…

ph 7.4 – 8.6
gh 160 – 320 ppm
kh 180 – 240 ppm
1 teaspoon of aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water
Zero for ammonia and zero for nitrites
Temperature 76 – 78 degrees
 
Skip the salt and save it for your French Fries, common aquarium salt does not increase harness or PH. Just check your basic water parameters such as ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.

I've kept and bred wild caught fish with checking or knowing for that matter what my GH and KH were.

The only real concern with PH is that it's stable, the fish will adapt when properly acclimated.

Keep the nitrates below 20ppm and feed a high quality diet like New Life Spectrum and you'll be just fine...
