I just got a meter for TDS to check my RO unit. Am i looking to have the TDS at 0?

Yes, although if its just RO it might be above zero until it goes through DI to get it to zero.

If the water from the RO is 14 that is normal. Preferable is one more stage of filtration which is DI. That will reduce the TDS to zero. Compare the TDS of tap to your RO. Once it's gone through RO add your salts and its good to go.

A DI filter is quite cheap and so is the media so I think it's worth getting the best water possible for minimum investment. Many use tap water without any problems.
