I've got a 54g corner bowfront that just has the 2 NO lights in it. It's not even cycled yet , but I'm thinking about lighting upgrades already.
I'd like to have a reef tank eventually, but I know this is 6+ months away. I have no ideas yet of what I want to keep.

What can I do in about 30" x 7" ?

I've found a few fixtures that are 130 watts, which is 2.2 wpg. Can I grow anything with this? The tank is a little deeper than an average 55g tank.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to build a custom hood to keep the cats out and hang lights over the tank without the glass top in the way. Any experience with this?

Your best bet with a tank like that will be either PC powerquads or preferabley MH lighting. The MH would be much easier than conventional length fluorescent bulbs and be easier to manipulate within a hood of that shape.

Cheers
Steve
