When I started out in this hobby i didn't have a idea of saltwater reef keeping. Kept doing research, and been asking questions to people at LFS as i didn't know anyone personally who has saltwater tank. As months passed i gained experience (lost couple of bucks :D) and have changed things quite a bit.

Here's my old sump set up

I didnt have a fuge at that time so i made an external fuge out of a bucket

Then after 2 months got sick of the set up and Thanks to dad he made me a stand

I can't wait to get a bigger tank again. I had a 55 gal and gave it to my dad when I moved to an apartment...but soon!!!! Yours looks great. But why do you need a light in the sump? Haven't gotten to that part yet.

It's for the cheato that's being grown in the sump. Beneficial algae. Perfect place to raise copods :)

For growing macro-algae.
It helps remove nitrogenous waste from the water column... as it grows larger you trim it back and throw the excess out, the nitrates go out with it. (If you let it grow so large that it starts to die-off in the aquarium/refuge then it just releases those nitrates back into the water column.)

Every 2 weeks if you have an algae issue or trying to lower PO4. If not then when your PO4 starts going up or you start to see algae
