black sand

anyone have it?
any benefits over the regular white/tan type?
does it show detrius more?

Hara had/has the black sand. I think it gives a nice contrast for sure. It does give the tank a darker look as the sands not reflecting the light like the lighter sand.

Black sand is ususally volcanic in origin. This means that it is silica based and should also have a some heavier metals in the mix.

If you are relying on your substrate to help with pH levels and for supplying calcium to your tank, I would think this would not be your best choice ( unless you are mixing it in with a calcium based sand).
