brown algae on live sand only

i have 80 lbs of aragonite sand and i also put in 10 lbs of live sand that was given to me. now i have the most disgusting brown algae but it is ONLY on the live sand. any ideas?

when we started our tank it started like that. we were told to not to leave our lights on as much . that pretty much got rid of it.

It sounds like diatoms which are a common algae in newer aquariums. It will, unfortunately, get worse before it gets better. You can stir the top layer of the sand, or i(if your tank is completely cycled) add some critter to take care of it for you, like: Cerith snails, nassarius snails, nerites snails, astrea snails and trochus snails.
