Was sand hunting today b/c im upgrading to a 55g tank and at menards i found this sand labeled silica sand for every day use or something like that. It said it was non-toxic and some other stuff like that. The sand appeared to be sugar sized and not to jagged. What do ya think?

ty very much!

Silica is fine, just make sure it is all silica. Many silica sands contain feldspar which will fuel algae growth. 100% pure silica should have a breathing hazard on it, as silica is ground glass, it's not good to get it in your lungs ;)

Just dont inhale :D

Where have I heard that before?

Probably would be best to wear goggles and a breathing mask when working with it.

and watch those insenuations :p

rossv,

I work at menards, the sand in which you are talking about is used for sandblasting and it will work easily for SW use. Just use some LS on top and your good to go.. You can also buy black sand if you would prefer. It is contained as 100% silica just as RR stated. HTH
