I was planning on just buying carbon and putting it in a filter bag instead of using the cartridges. I was going to use marineland carbon. Do I just set it in my filter? How much carbon should i use?

Marineland is good stuff (from what i've read) & anywhere there is water flow in your filter should work just fine.

I hear from reefrunner that the walmart brand of carbon is just repackaged marineland carbon. same thing, just much cheaper. I will be trying that next time. for now though I am using marinelands stuff.

what kind of bag r u puting it in? does it need to be something special like cheescloth or something?

some use women's stockings or panyhoses. i use a net from an old isloation cage.

You can also buy fine mest bags at the LFS that are designed for different types of media.
