carbon in a sump

i am building a sump right now and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how to set it up so i can use some kind of carbon in it. if not, what are some things i can use in the sump to keep water clear and take care of the mechanical filtration? thanks

im a big fan of purigen too keeping the water crystal clear, mabey give that a try.

to reword my question better. i am planning on having a 12x12x12 area for filtration in my sump. what do i put in it? or what have you guys who have sumps put in it for bio and mech filtration? thanks
