I have a 36" hood that can take 2 x 16" CFL. Right now I have 1 coralife 36w 10k CFL, I bought 2 of them 1 I cracked for $80..yikes! I retrofitted 1 NO 20w actinic bulb. My tank dimensions 36x16x20.
How much total wattage do I need sufficient enough to start a reef tank & which one can I get at home depot thats sutiable. I was thinking about getting MH, but what can I get to retrofit my hood to be able to recieve MH . So with the hood that I have right now, what would you do?http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDU...ID=cccladcmkgeefgjcgelceffdfgidgmm.0&MID=9876

HD bulbs are the wrong light spectrium
We all had to pay big$$ too, there is no way around it LOL. Good light for a reef, when using fluorescents, is 3-6 watts per gallon of aquarium water. Getting them in the right spectrum (k) is just as important (if not more) than watts. HTH
