Saturday I added a coral banded shrimp and he's quite shy, staying in the same area, he's not very adventurous. Is this common?

Depends on his tank mates. In a quiet setting, he will come out and be part of the entertainment, but if there are some aggressive fish, he will hang out in the shadows and come out at night.
