DSB provide an anaerobic environment for bacteria to thrive. This type of benifical bacterial is very effective at consuming NO3. The down side is that toxic pockets of sulfur can also be trapped in the DSB. If released, they can foul water. Keep in mind that a true DSB really needs to be 5-6 inches in depth to be effective and should not be sifted. I prefer a 2 inch sand bed. It will not collect detritus and is nicely sifted by my critters.
