E.T.S.S. skimmer question?

i was wonder about the bio balls in the E.T.S.S. skimmer...Would it better better to use without the balls or would it create a problem?

Unless I'm mistaken, the balls are necessary to create the bubbles. If you remove them, you won't get the turbulence you need and there will be very few, if any, bubbles.

The force of the water going over the bioballs in a downdraft skimmer will prevent it from becoming a biological filter.
