I'm looking at getting a fanworm or two, as my first corals.

I've read the Sabellidae family are of the most hardy, and don't require any particular lighting or really vigorous circulation (just a good amount).

But, 3 questions:-

1. My tank is 5 months old, but has good stable conditions. Will a fanworm do ok in my system, or should I wait for my tank to mature more?

2. What do the fanworms eat? Do they require special feeding?

3. I have some blue/red-legged hermit crabs and a fire shrimp. Will they try to eat the fanworm?

4. If I buy one that's attached to a piece of live rock or substrate, should I QT it for a few days to make sure there's no ammonia etc. let off from the rock, before I put it in my main tank?

Thanks!

Feather dusters aren't corals, they are just worms.

They will eat any preparation for filter-feeding inverts.

Just acclimate and add them directly.

Don't know anything about corals/non-mobile inverts (as you can tell) :p

Will the crabs/shrimp bother them?

If I do get one on a piece of live-rock, shouldn't I QT it to make sure it doesn't give off any ammonia (from die-off etc.) though?

They should be fine.

You don't have to worry about die-off when you buy stuff from the LFS.
