I came home the other day to find my mum using some very strong-smelling furniture polish on the dinner table, which was right next to my QT at the time (only a loose lid on it).

It took us a few hours with all the doors open to get rid of the smell.

Could the fumes have caused problems in my QT?

Its possible yet unlikly. Anything airborn has a chance to get into the water via the natural gas exchange that occurs. This is the very reason I avcate not using ammonia based window cleaner on the glass of teh tank or even spraying it in the same room as a tank.
