Gate Valves vs Ball Valves

I have seen on some plumbing where people both the gate valves and the ball valves. Is there any particular reason why the do that? Do they not each serve the same purpose?
If not what would be the difference a gate valve and a ball valve?

Love me ball valves, gate valves have a higher fail rate imo.

They are different takes on the same thing. A ball valve is simply a ball being moved to open and close the area where a gate is...well a gate.

ball valves generally are the way to go on our smaller systems , for the most part they are easier to negotiate ,typically a smaller footprint ,cheap and very reliable

Which would be better slip or threaded for the gate valves, ball valves and true unions?

I prefer thread on valves in case they need to be serviced or replaced.
