I switched from a halogen torchiere lamp to a fluorescent one recently. Now I'm looking to put the old one to good use. Could I remove the top of the lamp, rewire it, and hang it over the tank like a MH light for corals and invertebrates like that?

I have no experience with MH lights. So I was wondering if the halogens would generate less heat than MH, and more importantly, if the light has the right color.

Heat is probably about the same. Color is way off. I don't think it will work for corals. Although I have never tried it, I expect the tank would be very yellow with a halogen light.
