hermits

Whats so bad about hermits that people like to have clawless tanks?
is it because they will pick off a snail or two to use the shell or are they harmful to something else?
Is there a type of hermit that is better for the tank then another?

Hermits kill a lot of snails (and smaller hermits) for their shells. I still have them, but it is annoying. Especially red hermits which tend to grow rather large in my tank.
