How long do halide bulblast?

How long do halide bulbs last? Do they need to be changed before they burn out?

I do not have halides, but from reading on here a lot - most people say they are only good for 9-12 months.

Are you using these for a reef? If so, yes, they generally shift in color at anywhere from 8 to 12 months. If it's just to light your tank, and you like the way they look, you can run them till they burn out.
