A used 3' MH hood (Hamilton) with 2x175 MH and Actinics (03?). Magnetic ballasts. Don't know how old it is. This guy got it from a friend 8mo ago and he's replaced the bulbs (MH 2mo actinics 5mo).

He wants 260 for it. The only thing is that I don't know how old it is, how well it was taken care of and how long it will last (since this person wasn't the original owner). I was worried that I'd spend 260 on this one only to have to spend 800 on one in 6mo! Any good experiences buying used ones?

Tell your friend that the used bulps are worth $80 bucks and the balasts are worth nothing because there is no way for you to know how much life is still in them.

Never bought one, personally.

But, CHeck it out. Make sure Ballasts are not rusted, make sure wire connections are good, no bare wires, everythings seated firmly.

Most importantly, make sure there are no signs of salt creep! Don't want salt anywhere near that stuff.
