Magnetic vs. Electronic Ballast

Can someone explain to me the differences between magnetic and electronic ballasts? Also what are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Thanks.

All I know is that the magnetic's are louder and use more power than the electric ones do. I also undrstand that the electrics make the bulbs last monger.
