I have a hood over my 55g aquarium. Would I be able to add a 250w metal halide setup inside the hood but the bulb will only be about 2-3" max away from the top of the aquarium. I'll have 4 fans inside the hood to cool it off, but I don't want it heavily affecting the temp. Anyone have experience of this before?

That is too close to the water. IMO, I would have them no less than 10 inches from the water.

thanks for the info, grr.. I guess I got to find some way to bump up the hood

I agree w/ Hara. Access to the tank would be very limited along w/ the possibility of a lamp exploding from getting splashed. I have 2x250's over my 55 and I can assure heat would be a huge factor at 2-3". Mine are at 10" and I still have to keep an eye on the temperature in the summer months.
