Mucky refugium - Clean it out?

I have a refugium in my sump as well as a HOB refugium. They've become rather murky places. Should I periodically clean out? Not with soap or anything but just wash off the rocks and clean off the sides and whatnot. I'm guessing this would kill most of the stuff in there.
Or should I just leave it be and that's how they're supposed to be?

Well the water is clear but there is "gook" all over. Maybe a picture is needed. It doesn't look like a mini version of the main tank.

Vacuum out all of the detritus and mulm. Clean them alternately, not at the same time.

Once a week I clean all sponges from the pumps in the fuge and dump the skimmer cup and wipe it all out. About once a month, I scrape the glass, prune the chaeto. That is all I do with mine.

I do the same as Mrs Hara except scrape the glass. I guess I should do that.
