My tank a lil over a year old. I just bought a sump n overflow for it. What's the best way to get the water into the sump for the first time?

You have to add new SW to the system to make up for the additional volume. I would just fill it with your newly mixed SW. As you pump it up to the DT, it will mix over a few minutes with the old water. Just need to make sure you match temperature and salinity as you will be adding a pretty large volume by percentage.

Would this work- siphon water from dt into sump, then put new sw into dt, then turn everything on?

Yes that will work. It involves an extra step that I am not sure is necessary though ;)
