I know this is kind of a newbie question, but I've never really thought about it. What at the benefits of adding live phytoplankton to one's tank? I've always done it, but never thought to ask why.
It is one of the most basic food sources, sort of at the bottom of the food chain. It's main benefits in a marine tank are to feed filter-feeding inverts. Careful with some of the off-the-shelf phyto foods, they can foul water pretty quickly if used too much.
