playing catch with food?

Why do my clownfish seem to be playing "catch" with thier food before eventually spitting it out and moving to a different piece...or just eating it?

They will stick it part way in thier mouths...spit it out...stick it back in...and repeat.

probably because it's too big to swallow. my 2 gouramis sometimes play catch together with a pellet all the way to the bottom of the tank

the food is most likely too big. i had to break small pellets in half for my clown to eat when he was smaller.
