plz help w/ diatoms? rust colored areas...

hey fellaz me again,

ive developed a case of diatioms i believe. rust colored spots/ areas on my live rock and sand. it been getting worse everyday!!! i have quite a bit now. someone told me that this is common on new tanks. which my tank is only about 2 months old. and that they will go away on there own. ive had problems with my nitrates recently. is this why im having the diatom out break? im just getting worried because like i said it looks pretty bad and is getting worse.

also ive been keeping my light off hoping that will help. i only have a few hermits and a sea urchin in my tank so i dont really need the lights on at the moment.

is there anything else i can do to help get rid of it or at lease slow it down?? LOOKS LIKE SH*T

THX

Snails are pretty good at kicking diatoms in the crotch. But other than that there's not a whole lot you can do. They will wear themselves out eventually
