Protecting the rug

I'll be setting up the 90 gal fish tank I have very soon. I'm curious if anyone out there put anything under the tank stand to protect their rug? I know they have rug protectors or another rug could work. How far out from the tank did you go if you went this route? Are you glad you did it?

I used one of those under carpet plastic matts with the little spikes. Similar to the ones used in offices for chairs with wheels. Over that I placed a cheap throw rug. I only went a foot around the perimiter but I wish I'd have increased that to two.

Double protection sounds like a good idea. I was wondering if 1' would be enough, but good old Mom suggested 2 as well. Thanks for the reply.
