Protein skimmer fluctuating?

so i just bought a super reef octopus lx1000 HOB skimmer.

all the reviews and everyone i talked to say its an amazing HOB skimmer


so i've been trying to set it and the level of the bubbles seems to fluctuate.... if i set it so the bubbles come to the top of the pipe, it eventually overflows the cup.

then i set it again, and now the bubbles are way low... not even reaching the top of the pipe


any advice?

New skimmers need a week or two to break in. Just let it run so it doesn't overflow for a couple of weeks and then try setting it.

but its not new new.... i bought it used... it was used for about 6 months prior

i read it has something to do with change in surface tension.... is this true?

You`ll need to start a new break in period since you started using it.
