Protein skimmer or biodenitrator

I am wondering if this biofilter would actually be able to replace a protein skimmer. It seems most of the debates I have came across in searches are in reference to water changes and how the biofilter allows you to go like 3 months w/o the need for a change and others stating that is a bad idea. I am wondering if one is more concerned about not having a protein skimmer than reducing water change needs, if this would be a good alternative.
